The mobility of the chest is another important factor, especially in reference to its relation with height and weight. From a large number of observations in the British service the maximua chest expansion of a man of average size. 1S- 35 years of age,

was found to be two to two and a half inches; rarely three inches. The "chest mobility", that is, the difference between the measurement at insp. iration and expiration, should be at least 2 inches in men below 5 feet 7 inche in height, and 2 inches in these above that height. The circumference of the chest is measured by passing the tape around it immediately at the point of th shoulder blade, the arm hanging down. Generally the tape will then be found to fall below the nipple.

The following standards are useful as showing that there is an average proportion in healthy, fully developed men between the height, weight, chest measurement, and chest mobility, which, however, will admit of slight variation. without indicating a departure from health,

The Examination of the Recruit.

The following order is advised to be followed:-

The general physique, skin, scalp and cranium, cars, eyes, nose, mouth, facs neck and chest should be exami ed and the chest measuremeals taken.

The arms should be extended above the heal, the bricks of the hands being together, and the applicant required to eough vigorously; any form of rupture is now readily discovered by the hand and

eye.

The hands remaining extended above the head, the man is required to take a loug step forward with the right foot and bend the right know, the genital organs are conveniently exposed and varicocele or other defects in the scrotum may be recognised,

The cart and lungs are examined

The elbows should be brought firmly to the sides of the body, and all of the joints of the arms, forearms, wrist, fingers examined; extend the arms above the head and locking the thumbs, bend over to touch the ground with the hands keeping the knees straight. The mobility of the joints is tested thoroughly.
